SNAP Benefits Changes Are In Effect
Federal changes to SNAP benefits (food stamps) are in effect as of September 1, 2025. These changes are significant and could result in many people in our community losing food security as soon as December if they don’t understand the steps they need to take! We all need to ensure our community knows about the federal changes and what paperwork needs to be submitted to the state to ensure everyone eligible receives their benefits.
Due to these changes most adults on SNAP are required to either work at least 20 hours/week or qualify for an exemption. People who do not appropriately document that they need these conditions can only receive 3 months of benefits over a 3-year period – meaning, they will run out in December 2025.
SNAP recipients will need to take the following actions.
- Complete the PA DHS Screening Form Checklist
- If health limits their work, have a doctor or therapist sign the Medical Exemption Form
- Return the Screening Form + proof to the County Assistance Office
Details about who needs to take action, and when, can be found on the PA DHS website.
